What Is Progress Learning?

About NJSLA Testing

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) is a statewide, standards-aligned assessment designed to measure student proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science. It provides educators with data to ensure students are on track for academic success and to help guide instructional improvements.

NJSLA assessments are primarily computer-based, delivered through the TestNav platform. Schools also offer paper-based versions as accommodations for students with specific needs. Schools can administer these assessments in spring and fall testing windows.

Students are administered the English Language Arts assessment in grades 3-9, Mathematics in grades 3-8, and Science in grades 5, 8, and 11.

How Do You Prepare for the NJSLA?

Students preparing for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) should incorporate practice exams into their regular study routines. Educators can help by aligning lessons with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) to ensure that students are well-prepared. Students should also develop essential test-taking strategies, such as time management and stress reduction techniques.

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) provides practice tests and released items through the New Jersey Assessment Resource Center to help students and teachers become familiar with the structure and content of the exams. Teachers can use these resources alongside benchmark assessments and formative checkpoints to track progress and adjust instruction throughout the year.
